Where HIV Originated
In the late 1980 and early 1981, doctors started seeing rather frequently diseases that were previously rare in male homosexuals in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. These illnesses included Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, a rare skin cancer known as Toxoplasmosis.
Tests performed on these patients revealed that their immune system were greatly weakened. Doctors couldn’t identity the cause of weakened immune system. They proposed two possible explanations :-
- Use of retroviral drugs cross-linking to damage the immune system.
- A new infectious organism was damaging the immune system. As whole initial cases were among all homosexuals, the disease was given a name GRID (Gay Related Immune Disease). Later on, researchers started seeing the same illness among the other non-gay population and by 1982, they were convinced that is not a gay disease.
In the same year, the disease got its name AIDS. By this time, the doctors were almost fully convinced that the virus caused AIDS. Like many other aspects of HIV/AIDS, the rest find the cause of disease a great drama and generates controversies that were not settled for a long time (now settled).
The two Nobel Prize winners of this were :-
The National Institute of Health (NIH) in the U.S. led by Ronald Bravo and Pasteur Institute of France led by Luc Montagnier.
