Hygiene Food Safety | Avoid Microwaving These 8
Food hygiene or food safety is the handling, preparation and storage of food or drink in order to reduce or even prevent its consumers from getting sick due to food-borne illness.
The aim of food hygiene is to prevent food from going bad or becoming contaminated at any stage of production, collection, storage, sell, consumption.
According to the WHO, the core messages of five keys to food safety and hygiene are:
- Keep clean.
- Separate raw and cooked.
- Cook thoroughly.
- Keep food at safe temperatures.
- Use safe water and raw materials.
However, microwave is among the most USEFUL kitchen equipment we love to use or having around.
Some of us are wary of microwaves because of their use of radiation. For food safety and personal reasons, they decide not to buy or use it at all if present in their homes.
All in all, prevention is always the best option to good health. In spite of that, here are the 8 common everyday foods that you should NEVER put in your microwave (unlike others e.g. pasta, corn, oatmeal e.t.c.)
Never Microwave These 8 Foods
1.) Whole Eggs
Yeah, most of us love these nutrient-packed delicacies like sprinkling them with salt, adding pepper or eating with salad but avoid microwaving them.
Never try to hard boil an egg by microwaving it because it may explode as a result! For food safety and hygiene reasons, avoid it at all costs.
According to research, since microwaves produce high temperature when ON in turn, it creates steam within the egg. As the pressure builds, it can definitely cause the egg to explode.
2.) Chilli Pepper
Capsaicin is a compound present in peppers. This chemical determines how spicy they are. In other words, it makes chilli peppers “hot”. Therefore, if you subject or rather expose it in high temperatures, it vaporizes.
Nevertheless, microwaving chilli pepper releases the gases into the air which will sting your eyes. Apart from turning into a smoking veggie, microwaving can set your chilli peppers aflame! This affects your food safety as well as hygiene.
3.) Processed meats
Processed meats such as bacon and sausages have a multitude of chemicals and preservatives. Firstly, this is a potential threat to hygiene and your food safety, TAKE CARE!!!
Now, imagine you are microwaving such high-protein foods…full of foreign additives. That can lead to the generation of cholesterol oxidation products.
These COPs actually, are more harmful to our arterial cells more than typical cholesterol.
Therefore, check on your cooking methods with respect to food safety and hygiene.
4.) Breast milk
Are you breastfeeding? Do you pump and freeze your breast milk for later use? Protect your child and never put cold breast milk in the microwave for thawing.
With respect to food safety and hygiene, it is dangerous. Breast milk can heat unevenly creating “hot spots” that could burn your baby’s sensitive palates.
5.) Frozen Fruits
Defrosting your frozen fruits by microwaving is wrong because their beneficial properties can be converted to carcinogens.
Grapes are one of the common fruits we love putting in our refrigerators as part of food safety and hygiene, right?
However, the moment you remove them for consumption, make sure you defrost with running water at least. Otherwise, anything hot or next to high temperatures will be harmful or cause damages.
In this case, microwaving may cause spewing and exploding into flames.
There is nothing like food safety in heating up your bread in the microwave. Reason? It makes it harder. No one needs to feed on a hard, stale and chewy mess of a bread. Do you?
7.) Vegetables e.g. Spinach
There are vegetables that are rich in nitrates like spinach, kales (sukuma wiki), carrot and others that you should NEVER microwave. Why?
The good reason behind it is that, they can turn toxic if you reheat. On top of that, a release of cancerous carcinogenic properties comes through. Huh! You should be wary of your hygiene/food safety or else…
More so, the iron present in spinach and other green leafy vegetables may oxidize due to microwaving.
Oxidation of iron in these foods is a dangerous chemical process that affects your food safety and hygiene. It has links with production of free radicals responsible for various diseases like cancer and infertility.
Finally, microwaving broccoli destroys the good-for-you nutrients.
8.) Frozen Meat
When you microwave it, there will be uneven distribution of heat which can cause some areas to overcook while others remain frozen.
Studies show that this can allow bacteria to grow in the cold-remaining areas. This may in turn cause food-borne diseases hence, a blow to your food safety and hygiene.
If bacteria can be prevented from getting into the food or conditions unfavourable to their development can be created then, food will remain usable for a longer period.
- Avoid removing the food.
- Putting the food at room temperature and back to the freezer. This can easily cause food poisoning.
- However, for microwave users, never use plastic containers to prepare your food.
