3 Main HIV Predisposing Factors
i.) Cases of Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Most STDs have a common system i.e. itching, chancroid, redness of the skin. One who has STD predisposes his/her body to HIV infection especially during unprotected sexual intercourse with a HIV positive partner (through the broken skin caused by STD). Also, incorrect use of condom can predispose one to HIV infection.
ii.) Lack of circumcision
It predisposes one to HIV in that:-
- The space between the foreskin and the penis is warm and moist therefore, provides a good media for the growth of microorganisms.
- The glans of uncircumcised penis is more prone to bruises during sexual intercourse as opposed to a glans of a circumcised penis which is hardened.
- The langerhans cells found between the foreskin and the penis tend to attract the HIV virus.
iii.) Number of Sexual Partners
The higher the number of sexual partners the higher the risk. It’s harder to estimate one’s number of sexual partners. Often, the following formula is used:
N = 1 + n
The capital N = Total number of sexual partners
