Beware of Campylobacter jejuni Infection
It is caused by an enteric gram negative (Gr- ve) microaerophilic bacterium. It is known as Campylobacter jejuni.
It is among the most common causes of bacteria gastrointestitis i.e. inflammation of the GIT. It is.known to cause gastroenteritis worldwide.
It presents with various symptoms ranging from mild gastroenteritis to severe dysentery.
The GIT of many animals both domestic and wild is the main reservoir of the infections. They include poultry, cats, dogs, sheep, cattle e.t.c. Also in raw milk are harboured.
By the faecal-oral route by ingesting contaminated food, untreated water, undercooked poultry and unpasteurized milk.
Person-to-person transmission occurs but less common.
Outbreak is common in daycare centers and nursery schools.
